Study Task 2b: Research on our specific chosen practice (Advertising and Public Awareness)

In this seminar we were to find at least five books from 5 different sources which relate to our chosen practice and explore different aspects and areas of the practice that we have chosen. We are then to read these books and hopefully find important information which well help us find out about the context and chronologies of the practice that we chose in order for use to complete our critical writing essay.

Study Task 1: Exploring the Topic

In this module I am to explore and research one of the six topic and question choice from the following:

  • Typography and Type Design
  • Advertising and Public Awareness
  • Branding and Logo Design
  • Editorial Design
  • Design for Screen
  • Printmaking
Before starting to pick which topic I would like to explore further, first I am to research about these topics in order to gain basic information and knowledge about them. I'm going to find two "good" designs in relation to each topic as well as explain my reasons why I have chosen those designs.

  • Typography and Type Design - the main difference between these two is that typography is about arranging fonts and typefaces in order for it to have a purpose and is appealing to an audience; while a type design is the process of creating a new typeface e.g. by shaping individual glyphs.
  • Advertising and Public Awareness - Advertising is a form of written, audio or  visual communication that promotes a brand, person, idea or service to people. Public Awareness relates to the target audience's level of understanding about the marketing communication that is being tailored fore them.
  • Branding and Logo Design - Branding can be a way of creating a business, person's or products identity and Logo Designing may help this identity to become more prominent as the logo can help the brand become more memorable and it help's the target audience associated the logo with the brand e.g. Nike = tick mark.
  • Editorial Design - being able to use innnovative typography combined with smart and strong layout and composition; mostly used in magazines, books, newspapers - anything that is printed physically but also on the web for websites or smartphone screens, tablets etc.
  • Design for Screen - being able to create a screen that will engage an audience and is also easy and efficient to use. Also has to consider the target audience - age? gender? occupation? interests? etc.
  • Printmaking - ability to create designs by printing which may typically be done on paper; prints can be made by etching, mono printing, screen printing, linocutting etc.
